Hi! Are you interested in making a positive impact on your community? Join us! Our mission is to build and support a vibrant network of residents and businesses who live and work near The Alameda who are committed to creating a safer and better quality of life for everyone by engaging in local action and city advocacy to make a real difference. We believe that when we come together, we can create a stronger and more thriving neighborhood for residents and businesses.
The Alameda Urban Village (detailed link) represented both a promise to local businesses and residents who moved in of a thriving community. Since it's inception in 2012, it has failed to live up to the unrealized potential. We are currently faced with significant blight stemming from crime which is evidenced by:
Commercial Crime (Theft, Loitering, Littering, Defecation): This has impacted multiple local establishments:
Ace Hardware has over 20 thefts for every 100 customers that come in
Red Dot has had to pause multiple training sessions to address
Mini-Mart has had multiple break-ins
Whole Foods had a catalytic converter theft ring
Starbucks had to remove their furniture
Multiple storefront windows have been etched, smashed, graffitied
Residential Crime: Residents are unsure what they will encounter in their front yards or if packages are missing
Sleeping and littering in residential yards
Package thefts
Car smash and grabs
Unit break-ins
Business Closures: The closure of desirable businesses makes living in the area less desirable.
CVS on The Alameda due to rampant crime, an inability to deter and stamp out theft (SJ Spotlight: Downtown San Jose loses another major retailer)
Grand Prix moved to a lower-crime city.
Unsafe Encounters: Local residents and employees have either witnessed /experienced violence or had interactions that made them feel unsafe (e.g. sexual harassment).
Safety / Code Creation/Enforcement: A massive fire resulting from unsafe camper vans parked in the lot of a commercial property owner that enabled it, despite multiple code violation reports spanning years.
Reduce crime, code violations, vagrancy, and blight on The Alameda
Reinvigorate urban planning efforts that have stalled
Attract businesses that enrich the neighborhood desirability
Do so through constant advocacy with Mayor Matt Mahan, D6's City Council candidates, SJPD and SJFD key leadership.
We want to build a 3-phased approach towards equipping our community to come together to solve these challenges. They are also highlighted in our navigation bar at the top
"Seek first to understand to be understood" - we want to drive community education to provide the context for how we got to where we are
We want everyone to start with the end in mind and plan together how to tackle the challenges of blight highlighted
We want to build a strong, unified presence of our community and neighborhood so our City Council representatives know there is focused advocacy
These are the things we believe in:
Trust, compassion, and respect, regardless of your politics. We respect differences and are focused on the common goals and outcomes that unite us.
Accountability. We seek answers to the hard questions from our city leaders and participating organizations
We are biased towards action. We aren't here to lament or meander, we're here to identify issues, learn the context, explore solutions, and drive results.
We are data-driven and believe metrics should be used to track and measure progress. We expect transparency and accountability of data provided by the city, and want to build strong relationships with our community and law enforcement that move the needle.
We believe in candidness and that there is always room for difficult yet respectful conversations absent of any bullying and recrimination
We celebrate successes when accomplishments and progress are made, and we believe in empowering residents and businesses to support accomplishments.
Who are you? Are you affiliated with the City of San Jose?
No, we are comprised of a coalition of community residents and business leaders on The Alameda. Our members play an active role in advocating our city for change. We are light on governance and organization and focused on solutions.
Do you currently endorse a City Councilmember Candidate for District 6?
We believe all candidates need to be asked the similar questions about the pressing issues, and their responses should be compared for the voting population to decide. We will here in this site list the questions and their respective responses gathered from either direct discussions in public forums or from news articles and other sources.
Do you have a political leaning?
We'd like to keep national politics out of the conversation, and local politics should be focused on what common ground we all have. Members will come in with diverse viewpoints and we want to respect and be inclusive in understanding how they fit into the larger narrative. There is zero tolerance for pitchforking and toxicity.
